HELEN EVELYN KOENNECKE

Helen Evelyn Koennecke, 90, nee Spenrath, of Comfort, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Comfort with the Rev. Shelley Simmont officiating.

Interment followed in the Comfort Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home where visitation was held Friday evening, Feb. 28.

Mrs. Koennecke, a retired school teacher, was born Jan. 11, 1924, in Comfort, the daughter of Eric Spenrath and Ella Schaefer Spenrath. She married Percy A. Koennecke on April 24, 1948, in Comfort. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Danz of Kerrville, and Joy Faigen and her husband, Mitch, of Newport Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Survivors also include a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Gloria Ann Spenrath of Comfort.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Koennecke was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Koennecke.

Pallbearers included Jeremy Danz, Jonathan Flora, Ruben Leonard, Justin Leonard, Paul Frantzen and Carl Frantzen.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Danz, Harrison Faigen, Malcom Faigen, Montgomery Faigen, Forrest Faigen and Steven Flora.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Robert Charles (R.C.) Kneupper

Mrs. Robert Charles (R.C.) Kneupper, 95, nee Augusta Mary Bippert of Comfort, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Comfort with the Rev. Shelley Summont officiating.

Interment followed at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery at Helotes.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home of Comfort where visitation was held Sunday evening, March 2.

Mrs. Kneupper was born Aug. 6, 1918, in La Coste, Medina County, the daughter of William R. Bippert and Sophie Geiger Bippert. She married Elton Steubing who died Aug. 9, 1963.

On April 11, 1969, she married R.C. Kneupper who died Jan. 9, 1993.

Mrs. Kneupper is survived by two sons, Carlton Steubing of Aurora, Colo., and Royce Steubing and his wife, Dolores, of Comfort; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and both husbands, Mrs. Kneupper was preceded in death by a sister, Paula Davis, and a brother, Reinhart Bippert.

Memorials may be made to the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Jerome Hubalek, 84, nee Caramel Joy Albrecht, of Taylor and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, March 2, 2014.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.

Private interment will follow in Ganado.

Memorials may be made to The Good Samaritan Center, Hill Country Memorial Hospice or Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.

RONALD LEE (RONNIE) GRAY

Ronald Lee (Ronnie) Gray, 58, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014.

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Gray was born Aug. 11, 1955, in East St. Louis, Ill., the son of Glenn Gray and Jean Osborne Gray.

He was a heavy equipment operator and painter.

Survivors include his mother, Jean Krohn, and a sister, Susan Stephens, both of Fredericksburg.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Robert Gray.

Memorials may be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

A rosary service will be held Thursday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by interment in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

MRS. EVERTON A. (SHORTY) BROWN

Mrs. Everton A. (Shorty) Brown, 88, nee Lucile D. Vorpahl of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Knopp Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. D.G. McCoury officiating. Annabel Wilkinson was the pianist and Gary Covin, the vocalist.

Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown was born April 5, 1925, in Guadalupe County, the daughter of Richard Vorpahl and Martha Krueger Vorpahl. She married Everton A. (Shorty) Brown on June 12, 1943, in Seguin. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1995.

Survivors include one daughter, Faun Blackburn of Somerset.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by one grandson, Jade Blackburn, and three brothers, Glenn Vorpahl, Kermit Vorpahl and Dale Vorpahl.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Gordon Klein, Dustin Klein, Edward Kohlleppel, Richard L. Vorpahl, Kenneth Vorpahl and Kevin Vorpahl.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Harper, with interment following at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.

No visitation is planned.

Mrs. Alexander Grobe, 86, nee Celia (Tobie) Farias of Comfort, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at 10 a.m. at Schaetter Funeral Home in Comfort with the Rev. Mike Peinemann officiating. Visitation was held beforehand.

Interment followed at the Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens in San Antonio.

Mrs. Grobe was born May 10, 1927, in San Antonio, the daughter of Lorenzo Farias and Celia Flores Mitchell Farias. She married Alfred Talmadge White, and after his death, married Alexander Grobe, who also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Grobe is survived by two daughters, one son and spouses, including Cheryl and Eric Pierce and Lisa Nimmo, all of Comfort, and Troy E. Cox of San Antonio; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Grobe was preceded in death by one daughter, Tobina D. Johnson; one son, John Skip Cox; one brother, Richard Farias, and one sister, Irene DeLeon.

Memorials may be made to the Golden Age Center in Comfort or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Eric Pierce, Seth Saur, Stanley Zwinggi, Aaron Scott, Mark Johnson and Ramer Spieth.

Chandlar Conaway Dietrich

CHANDLAR CONAWAY DIETRICH

Chandlar Conaway Dietrich, 68, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at her home.

Mrs. Dietrich was a graduate of Monterey High School in Lubbock and received her bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications from Texas Tech University.

Prior to retiring in 1994, she worked as a journalist for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, as well as various other publications.

She married Randy Dietrich on Dec. 30, 1977, and he survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dietrich is survived by one son, Will Dietrich of Bandera; two daughters, Leigh Dietrich of Fort Worth and Michaella Dietrich of Fredericksburg, and her mother-in-law, Carolyn Dietrich of Denver, Colo.

Memorials may be made to the Hill Country SPCA or to the charity of choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Lavora Jackson Choate

LAVORA JACKSON CHOATE

Lavora Jackson Choate, 84, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, March 8, 2014. 

A funeral mass was celebrated today, Wednesday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands with interment following at Sterling-White Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tuesday evening, March 11, at Sterling-White Funeral Home in Highlands.

Local arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Choate was born March 20, 1929, in Goose Creek, the daughter of Henry Livingston Jackson and Lillie Epley Jackson. She married Walter Choate on March 15, 1958. He preceded her in death in 1997.

After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Mrs. Choate moved to Colorado and worked as an office manager for Pittsburgh Glass and Wright Glass Co.

Upon her husband’s retirement in Deer Park, the Choates moved to Fredericksburg.

Survivors include four daughters and three sons and spouses, including Diane Denham of Austin; Duane and Betsy Choate, The Woodlands; Denise Choate, Baytown; Donna Choate, Channelview; David and Terri Choate, Dayton; Doug and Elizabeth Choate, Austin, and Delisa and Charles Smith, Tarkington Prairie.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is her sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Luther Choate of Baytown.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Choate was preceded in death by six siblings, including Lorraine, Burney, Chlothilde, Helen, H.L. and Lois.

Ruby Bell Bryan, 89, nee Wilkerson, of Vinita, Okla. and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at Heartsworth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vinita, Okla.

Graveside services and interment were held Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee, Okla., with the Rev. Gina Lee Jackson officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home of Vinita, Okla., where visitation was held Friday evening, March 7.

Mrs. Bryan was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Webbers Falls, Okla., the daughter of Robert E. Wilkerson and Zula Elmira McCullough Wilkerson. She married James Paul Bryan on Jan. 25, 1964. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1994.

She graduated from high school in Webbers Falls.

Prior to moving to Vinita, Okla., she resided in Bartlesville, Okla., Fredericksburg, and Broken Arrow, Okla.

Mrs. Bryan was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Grand Matron.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bryan was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

MRS. LEO HARTMANN

Mrs. Leo Hartmann, 93, nee Ella Klinksiek of Fredericksburg, died Friday, March 7, 2014.

A funeral mass was celebrated Thursday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at the Marienkirche with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist, and Annette Whittington, the vocalist.

Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a vigil service were held Wednesday evening, March 12.

Mrs. Hartmann was born May 17, 1920, in Fredericksburg, the daughter of William Fritz Klinksiek Jr. and Laurene (Laura) Weiershausen Klinksiek. She married Leo Moritz Hartmann on Jan. 13, 1940, at the St. Mary’s Rectory. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 2003.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Leola and Dana Overdorf of Fredericksburg, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Survivors also include two sisters-in-law, Irene, Mrs. Monroe Klinksiek of Fredericksburg, and Florence, Mrs. A.J. Skruhak of San Antonio, and a brother-in-law and spouse, Francis and Gertrude Hartmann of Blanco.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hartmann was preceded in death by one sister, Verna, Mrs. Paul Metzger, and a brother, Monroe Klinksiek.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund, St. Mary’s Parish Capital Campaign or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included David Mills, Garrett Mills, Herb Nebgen, Stephen Hartmann, Donald Klaerner and Mark Skruhak.
