John Fredrick Ahrns

John Fredrick Ahrns, 66, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.

Ahrns was born Feb. 24, 1947, in Atlanta, Ga., the son of John and Ann Ahrns.

In 1973, Ahrns and his family relocated from Dallas to Western Travis County where he was instrumental in the development of Westcave Preserve.

After his retirement in 2010, Ahrns and his wife, Brenda, moved to Fredericksburg.

Since then, he has volunteered as an LCRA water monitor, with the Fredericksburg Nature Center, the Old Tunnel State Park and as a board member of the Hill Country Land Trust.

In addition to his wife, Ahrns is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Rhonda Ahrns; a daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Dave Gosselin, and eight grandchildren.

Survivors also include a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Jerry Gardner; a brother and sister-in-law, Daryl and Duryonna Giles, and his mother-in-law, Doris Giles.

Memorials may be made to the Westcave Preserve or Hill Country Land Trust.
