James Ewald Eckert, 91, of Stonewall, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 23, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bobby Vitek officiating.
Graveside services, with military honors, and interment followed in the Stonewall Community Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home where visitation was held Friday evening, May 22.
Eckert was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Stonewall, the son of Benno H. Eckert and Thekla Weyrich Eckert. He married Dorothy Louise Houy on June 8, 1947, and she survives.
Attending Stonewall School through 10th grade, Eckert then went to Fredericksburg High School, graduating in 1941.
In the fall of 1941, he began welding classes at Fox Tech in San Antonio, and in December of that year, after World War II began, Eckert started working at Kelly Field in San Antonio.
After returning to Stonewall, he went into business with his father, purchasing a partnership in February 1946.
Over the years, Eckert became involved in various clubs and organizations in the county. He was the Scoutmaster of the Stonewall Boy Scouts for 15 years, and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
He was a charter member of the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department, and also helped organize the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter in Gillespie County in 1947. He also belonged to other military organizations.
He also served on the Stonewall Water Control and Improvement District for 15 years, serving as president most of the time.
Eckert belonged to the Stonewall Community Club and was a lifetime member of the Stonewall Heritage Society. He was also the first to receive the Jaycees’ Outstanding Young Citizen award.
In addition to his wife, Eckert is survived by one daughter, two sons and spouses, including Patsy and Patrick Slovacek, of Austin; Rodney and Denise Eckert, Stonewall, and Jimmy and Cathy Eckert, Fredericksburg.
Survivors also include six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Betty Eckert of Stonewall, and a sister-in-law, Emma Jane Eckert of Fredericksburg.
Eckert was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother, Benno Eckert Jr.
Memorials may be made to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society, Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department or to the charity of choice.
Pallbearers included James Daniel Slovacek, Chris Gallaspy, Neal Eckert, Louis Eckert, Cole Eckert and Erin Pomier.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Pattie Slovacek, Tara Gallaspy, Melissa Eckert, Brooke Eckert and Corey Pomier.
