
LYLA FAY HORLEN HARMON
Lyla Fay Horlen Harmon, 84, of Shawnee, Okla., and formerly of Willow City, died Thursday, March 20, 2014.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. Danielle Knapp officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation was held Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Harmon was born Feb. 13, 1930, the daughter of Emil and Mae Horlen of Willow City.
A 1946 Fredericksburg High School graduate, she graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in home economics.
On Feb. 3, 1951, she married Eugene Sherman.
She taught at Comfort High School, worked for the state department and the dietary department at Boulevard Hospital in Fort Worth, and about 15 years as an assistant dietician and senior dietary supervisor at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla.
In July 1978, she married Melvin Harmon. In 1979, she retired and they returned to live on her father’s ranch at Willow City and owned and operated a small machine shop for several years.
Mrs. Harmon was a member of the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Willow City Community Club, and attended church at Willow City Emmanuel Gospel Church for many years and Wesley United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Harmon is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Cordis Slaughter of Meeker, Okla.; a son, Tommy Daryl Sherman of Raleigh, N.C., and three step-daughters, Joan, Janis and Melva Jean and their spouses.
Survivors also include four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and a sister, Jere Horlen Harper of Fredericksburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
