JOHN R. MONTGOMERY

John Robert Montgomery, 86, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, May 20, 2013.

Graveside services and interment were held Thursday, May 23, at 10 a.m. at Der Stadt Friedhof.

Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Montgomery was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Florence, the son of Vester Montgomery and Madeline Wales Montgomery. He married Minerva Durst on Nov. 16, 1950, in Freder­icksburg. She preceded him in death on May 5, 1987.

Montgomery attended high school in Florence and during his senior year, joined the Air Force Reserve program.

Upon graduation, he attended the University of Arkansas until he was called to active duty.

While on active duty, he worked with B-29 aircraft and weather.

After World War II, he returned to civilian life and chose the sales field as his vocation.

He was a post commander of Louis Jordan Post 244 American Legion, judge advocate of the 21st District American Legion and chairman of the American Legion oratorical contest.

Montgomery is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Meurer of Fredericksburg and Diann Polker and her husband, Jack, of Grand Rapids, Ohio.

Survivors also include five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Ann Pierce of Cedar Park.

In addition to his wife and parents, Montgomery was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vernon Meurer, and two brothers, Ralph Montgomery and Wilbur (Boots) Mont­gomery.
